The Daily Telegraph in Britain reports that 3i Group (III/LN) is rumored to be considering a merger with another listed private equity group. Market observers point to Candover Investments as the obvious partner.
Investment bankers have reported hearing chatter than 3i may be looking to take itself private (it listed on the London Stock Exchange in the 1990s). That actually wouldn't be surprising with the discount to net asset value the shares are carrying -- and assuming the stated NAV is close to reality.
These rumors have sent the share price higher (not high enough to put my holding in the black, though). Yet some believe short sellers covering their 3i positions has played a role.
