Over my sister's recently, I picked up a copy of Frederick Forsyth's The Devil's Alternative off her bookshelf and quickly became engrossed. The book was published in the US in 1980 (a year earlier in the UK) and takes place in 1982.
The story is a Cold War thriller, which might make it seem dated. But not entirely. And that's because Ukrainian nationalism is at the heart of the book. Recent events (and not so recent) often involve Russia and the former members of the USSR. I'm reminded of that by reading this offering by Neil Barnett in The Spectator.
Good stuff. Both Barnett's article and almost anything by Forsyth.
