Let's get right to the five items being offered up for your review over the next couple of days.
- I first heard of this reading The Privateer website a couple of weeks or so ago. Then I saw the story again in the Daily Telegraph: Shoppers in Germany will soon be able to buy gold from vending machines. I note that the editors of Breakingviews aren't all that hot on the idea, though they think the metal itself has possibilities.
- The Can Turtles Fly? blog links to Marty Whitman's 2nd quarter letter and Sivaram adds his thoughts as well. Interesting reading on both accounts.
- I can't recall offhand whether it was last year's annual report, or the one before that. But Prem Watsa in his letter to Fairfax Financial (FFH) shareholders sang the praises of Johnson & Johnson. My only exposure is through owning Fairfax stock (and I remind readers that I've sold enough Fairfax stock to get my original capital back, making the company a free ride for me). Barron's Online has an article saying that Johnson & Johnson has rarely been this cheap over the past 20 years.
- David at the Finance Trends Matter blog links to a thoughtful (and meaningful) essay by 85-year-old Richard Russell, of Dow Theory Letters fame. The essay is "Identity: Know Thyself" and is something I'll read again this weekend after reading it today.
- Famed UK value manager Anthony Bolton reportedly thinks the stock market will continue making gains over the short term: "I think the economic data will continue to improve over the next few months and this could prove the backcloth for a further significant rise before the market consolidates," he says.
Have a great weekend. See you next week if not sooner.
Excellent - thanks for the pointer to Russell's brief essay, John. It really deserves all the readers it can get!

@David: You're welcome. Don't know that I agree with it 100% (not sure about his comments on religion, one way or the other, I know some may get hung up on that), but I GENERALLY endorse the thrust of what he says.
